Avoid sources of error

The most common sources of error at a glance and how you can avoid them. For a quick and accurate result.

1

Storage of samples

Feathers and hair should be stored dry and at room temperature. If these samples are refrigerated or frozen before shipping, moisture may be released upon thawing, which will degrade the DNA and render the samples unusable.

2

Packaging of samples

It is a common misconception that feathers need to be hermetically sealed in aluminum foil or plastic. In fact, the moist and warm microclimate in the packaging promotes decomposition and damages the DNA. Instead, blood quills and other moist samples should be air-dried for 24 hours before shipping or wrapped in absorbent paper and then placed in the sample bag.

3

Individual packaging of samples

Each sample should be individually wrapped to avoid transfer of cellular material or viruses between samples. Multiple loose feathers in one envelope can lead to cross-contamination.

4

Labeling of samples:

Labeling should be easy to read from the outside. It is inconvenient and error-prone to have to open samples to extract information. Information such as species and ring number should be clearly visible and not hidden in the packaging.

5

Number of samples for virus detection

At least three feathers are required to detect viruses such as avian polyomaviruses (APV), circoviruses (PBFDV) and avian bornaviruses (ABV). To increase the probability of detection, a blood sample or swab can also be sent.

6

Blood in the quill is not required

A correctly plucked contour feather contains enough cell material on the quill for a DNA test. Dry, bloodless feathers can be packaged in aluminum foil, but the packaging should be clearly labeled on the outside.

7

Use of gloves

To protect against the transmission of pathogens, it is recommended to wear disposable gloves when taking samples and to change them between animals.

Dealing with sick animals

If a bird shows symptoms of illness, the first port of call is the veterinarian. He or she will decide on the necessary tests and the appropriate type of sample.
